Amalgam Free Practice
Tumwater Family Dentistry is proud to be an amalgam free practice. This means that when a patient needs a filling we choose to use mercury-free fillings, as opposed to silver dental amalgam, which can contain up to 50% mercury.
Silver dental fillings were once used to treat a number of dental problems, mainly cavities and damage from tooth decay. Patients would have this dental work performed, unaware that they were putting potentially harmful materials directly into their body.
The decision to become an amalgam-free practice was done both for the sake of our patients and our dental staff. There are numerous health problems that have been linked to not only having a silver filling in your mouth, but coming into close contact with it – as our staff would on a day-to-day basis.
The biggest concern with silver fillings is the impact it has on our patients’ health. It has been discovered that over time small amounts of mercury vapors slowly leak out of silver fillings. This usually happens when you are chewing food or putting pressure on the filling. Over time, prolonged exposure to these vapors can have negative effects on your health.
We, at Tumwater Family Dentistry, want our patients to be as healthy as possible. Being an amalgam-free practice was just one of the many things we did to improve the health and safety of our patients.
In addition to making a commitment to not use silver fillings in our practice, we have made a commitment to help those who have previously had silver fillings placed in their mouths. Silver fillings can be removed and replaced with safer alternatives, but it must be done properly.
Our dental staff has undergone the specialized training needed to safely remove silver fillings and replace them with an amalgam-free alternative. Dr. Downing will happily discuss this option with you during your next appointment.
